Active West - Active Transport

Kinect Australia is working with Victoria University, the Western Bulldogs AFL Club , the City of Maribyrnong and the Victorian Department of Transport to promote active travel in Melbourne's West. Stage 1 of the Active West: Active Transport project is nearing completion and will provide initial research into aspects influencing choices of active transport for Victoria University students and the broader community in the west of Melbourne.

It is intended that this information will inform directions for infrastructure and subsequent targeted TravelSmart education and promotion in the next stages of the project to increase levels of walking and cycling for transport among the varied population groups living, studying and working in Melbourne's West.

Active West: Active Transport is a component of a major initiative of Victoria University and its partners Kinect Australia, The Western Bulldogs AFL Club and Maribyrnong Elite Sports College. Active West aims to build and support participation in active living across Melbourne's West and includes the establishment of a unique Sports Triangle in Footscray.

Development of the Sports Triangle will generate a substantial number of student trips between key destinations within the triangle ie Victoria University Footscray Park Campus, Whitten Oval, and Maribyrnong Sports College in particular. It is expected that there will also be an increase in trips to the triangle as more students are attracted to the programs provided by the key organisations.

The Active West - Active Transport project is both timely and important as it aims to encourage and support active travel by students within the sports triangle as well as influence travel behaviours of the broader community.

The project also has important linkages with other projects being conducted by the Western Bulldogs and the Maribyrnong Council as well as broader initiatives impacting on the area including the Footscray Transit Cities program and Maribyrnong Integrated Transport Strategy
