Sustainable Physical Activity in Neighbourhood Renewal

The Victorian Government provided funding of $80,000 for each of the four Sustainable Physical Activity in Neighbourhood Renewal (SPAN) projects in Norlane-Corio, Seymour, Wendouree West and Latrobe. Projects began in 2006-2007, with evaluation completed in 2007-2008.

The overall goal was to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and strengthen communities, through a program that promotes and supports physical activity and active living within a whole of community context. Each individual project developed and implemented a variety of strategies to suit their local circumstances. One key aim was to ensure outcomes are sustainable.  Access the case studies by clicking here.

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities and Physical Activity

Physical activity provides a sense of community and social connectedness for people of all cultures and languages. People playing sport together or engaging in physical activity are sharing a common interest and having fun.

There are also many common barriers preventing participation in physical activity such as lack of transport, language barriers, and cost. These barriers have been identified and addressed through a variety of settings and programs. These case studies highlight programs that have successfully engaged the CALD community groups through physical activity.
